FOX 35 NEWS

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) --Gas prices just jumped 12 cents and they show absolutely no signs of stopping.

We're at an average now of $3.51 a gallon. Analysts say the $4 mark is not far off.

But there is an easy way to stretch your dollar a bit. This one comes courtesy Money Magazine and Consumer Reports.

They’ve concluded through testing that watching your speed can save you nearly 55 cents a gallon at the pump.

“Most of the time, running about 60 to 65 is the best fuel mileage,” said Kurt Lincoln, fuel injection technician at Diesel Specialists in Altamonte Springs. “Anything over 65, 70 and you're really upping the RPMs.”

Lincoln has been dishing the same advice since the mid 1980's. It’s the same theory that Money Magazine recently tested.

And that is, every ten miles per hour you drive over 60, equates to the price of gas going up 55 cents a gallon.

In other words, if you're like the average I-4 commuter and drive 70 mph, slow it down to 60, and you can theoretically save 55 cents a gallon back at the pump.

For example, if you spend nearly 48 dollars a week filling up your car, you’re looking at saving $7 by slowing down on the highway.

You're moving the weight of a vehicle down the road, and it's taking more throttle pedal to get it to go,” said Lincoln. “And with gasoline you're watching throttle positioning and air volume going through the engine. So all that just increases more fuel consumption.”

Don't forget major wind resistance, too. Cars drink more exponentially as you creep toward 80 mph. Besides, at that point, the cost of gas may seem cheap if you're pulled over.

Tickets are healthy nowadays too, warns Lincoln.

Not that any of you want to do this, but driving slower than 55 could save you even more gas.

That is, if you don't get run over on I-4.
